Description
This is a town, not a village. The house is blush pink under a dark slate roof, with iron balconies, red blooms in the boxes and an ornamented street lamp on the corner throwing light onto the snow. A mother and two children have stopped at the bottom of the steps — one of the children is looking back at something. Behind them a couple walks past without slowing, the way people do on a street they live on. Everyone here is on their way somewhere.
What makes a house calendar different from a flat one is that it is meant to be lit. The form comes from the old German paper lanterns, where the point was never the picture on the outside but what happened when you put a candle behind it — the whole thing changes character after dark, and it changes a little more each evening.
Twenty-four windows open between the first of December and Christmas Eve, each one backed with translucent paper. Every door opened is another lit window, so the front of the house fills in gradually over the month and is at its brightest the night it matters.
