Description
Something has arrived. A man in a blue coat is on the steps of a deep red house with his arms full, and two children are waiting below him in the snow — one already reaching. Garland swags run the length of the eaves, the double doors behind him are green with a wreath hung between them, and paper stars are propped in the upstairs windows. Whatever he is carrying, it was worth coming out in the cold for.
Which is the right subject for this object, because it is two things at once. It is a Christmas card — it comes with an envelope, it can be addressed and posted — and it is the decoration the person receiving it will use for the next four weeks. That double life is unusual. Most cards are read once and stood on a mantelpiece until somebody clears them away.
Twenty-four windows open through December, each onto translucent paper. Set a light inside and it stops being a picture of a house and becomes one — the star ornaments in the upper floor catch the light first.
