Scandinavian Products: What You Can Expect to Eat When You Travel to Scandinavia

Raggmunk

If you’re planning a trip to Scandinavia, make sure you plan out some time to try the local cuisine. In this post, you can learn more about what types of food you can expect to each while traveling through Scandinavia.

If you’re looking for authentic Scandinavian products and sweets, make sure you shop our Scandinavian Shoppe. From handmade gifts to Swedish dish towels and Scandinavian shoes, we have everything you need whether you live in Scandinavia or are looking for a piece of Scandinavia for your home.

Scandinavian Food

We might be biased, but we think that Scandinavian food is delicious. From Norway and Sweden to Denmark, Iceland, and Finland, Scandinavia is filled with a wide variety of traditional foods and delicatessens you can only find in Scandinavia.

Lohikeitto

Lohikeitto is a warm Finnish dish that has chunks of fresh salmon combined with potatoes, leeks, and dill for seasoning.

Smörgåstårta

This might sound like a mouthful, but Smörgåstårta is an amazing Swedish dish. It is almost savory like a cake — but it’s a sandwich. Smörgåstårta is made by layering rye bread with fillings and toppings like egg, mayonnaise, olives, shrimp, ham, cold cuts, cheese, and smoked salmon.

Fish

While this might not sound as exciting as some of the other Scandinavian dishes, make sure you try some fresh fish. Scandinavia is known for its large fishing industry, so you want to make sure you try some dishes with fresh, local catches.

Meatballs

Whether you’re from Scandinavia — or you’ve visited your local Ikea store — you know that Scandinavians love their meatballs. These meatballs are often smaller and are made with fresh ingredients. To make a whole meal, Scandinavians usually serve their meatballs with mashed potatoes and jam — a meal known as köttbullar.

Potato Pancakes

Potato pancakes, also known as Raggmunk, literally translates to “crispy donut pan.” Scandinavians love their pancakes and will eat them for any meal. Raggmunk can be eaten with lingonberries or bacon-like pork and is common as a dinner plate in Sweden.

Reindeer

The indigenous people of northern Scandinavia are known for their reindeer husbandry. They have found a variety of ways to cook and preserve reindeer meat. You can either find it in a stew or smoked and dried like jerky. Make sure you try some reindeer if you’re visiting any country in Scandinavia.

Smørrebrød

smørrebrød is best described as an open-faced sandwich. A piece of bread will be piled with fillings like fish, meats, cheeses, pate, salads, and different spreads. The type of smørrebrød can vary, but make sure you grab one to try for yourself!

In our Scandinavian Shoppe, we have some sweet Scandinavian products, like our Sweets & Treats or perhaps a box of Swedish pancake mix. You can also learn more about our favorites when it comes to Scandinavian treats in our previous post.
