A Historic Symbol of Good Luck

The story of the Dala Horse (Dalahäst) began in the Dalarna region of central Sweden. According to legend, the wooden horse became a national toy in 1716 when soldiers fighting under King Charles XII carved them from scraps of wood during a harsh winter. These figures became a sign of good luck and were given to hosts as gifts or payment for room and board.
